Why mass flow matters more than volume flow

Volume changes with pressure and temperature. Mass does not. A cubic metre of diesel at 10 °C is not the same mass as a cubic metre at 40 °C. Process plants in Southeast Asia and the Middle East often run at high ambient temperatures. That shifts volume readings even when the actual product quantity stays constant. Coriolis meters solve this by measuring mass directly.

Silver Instruments supplies Coriolis flow meters from DN15 to DN300. We work with oil and gas operators, chemical plants, food processors, and water treatment teams. The meters handle liquids, slurries, compressed gases, and some low to medium viscosity fluids. For high viscosity applications above about 1000 cP we often recommend a positive displacement meter instead. But for mass tracking of fuels, solvents, acids, caustic, edible oils, and LPG the Coriolis type is hard to beat.


What the meter actually reports

A Coriolis meter reports mass flow in kg/h or t/h. It also reports density in kg/m3 and process temperature in °C. The transmitter calculates volumetric flow from mass and density when you need volume. This is useful for billing systems that still record volume. One device replaces a separate flow meter, density meter, and temperature sensor. That cuts installation points and reduces leak paths.

Output options include 4-20 mA HART, pulse, Modbus RTU, and RS485. For hazardous areas we supply ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 approved models. In practice most customers choose 4-20 mA HART because their existing DCS or PLC can read it without extra gateways. We have seen this on customer sites in Indonesia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and Chile.


Where Coriolis meters win over other types

Electromagnetic flow meters need a conductive liquid. Ultrasonic meters need clean flow profiles and decent straight runs. Vortex meters lose accuracy at low flow. Coriolis meters do not need conductivity and they handle low flow much better. A DN25 Coriolis meter from Silver Instruments can measure from 0 to 3000 kg/h for water like liquids. That covers pilot plants and small additive dosing skids.

Coriolis meters also handle two phase flow better than most velocity based meters. That matters in food and beverage where product pulses and air slugs happen. A dairy in Australia used our DN50 model to measure milk concentrate. The line pressure was 8 bar and temperature stayed near 65 °C. They replaced an oval gear meter because solids buildup caused repeat failures. We did not promise a perfect solution for every product. We did promise direct mass output and no moving parts in the flow stream.


Precision that operators can trust

Standard accuracy for our Coriolis mass flow meters is ±0.2 percent of rate for liquids and ±0.5 percent of rate for gases. Many units are calibrated on water at the factory. Some customers ask for viscosity calibration or high pressure calibration. We can arrange that before shipping. Repeatability is usually better than ±0.05 percent. That makes the meter useful for truck loading and reactor charging where batch errors cost money.

Here is the thing. Accuracy claims mean little without matching the meter to the actual flow range. A meter sized for 20000 kg/h will not read 50 kg/h well. We ask for minimum flow, normal flow, and maximum flow on every inquiry. This is not marketing wording. It is the difference between a stable process signal and a noisy reading.
