Why mass flow matters more than volume flow

Volume changes with pressure and temperature. Mass does not. A cubic metre of diesel at 10 °C is not the same mass as a cubic metre at 40 °C. Process plants in Southeast Asia and the Middle East often run at high ambient temperatures. That shifts volume readings even when the actual product quantity stays constant. Coriolis meters solve this by measuring mass directly.

What the meter actually reports

A Coriolis meter reports mass flow in kg/h or t/h. It also reports density in kg/m3 and process temperature in °C. The transmitter calculates volumetric flow from mass and density when you need volume. This is useful for billing systems that still record volume. One device replaces a separate flow meter, density meter, and temperature sensor. That cuts installation points and reduces leak paths.

Output options include 4-20 mA HART, pulse, Modbus RTU, and RS485. For hazardous areas we supply ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 approved models. In practice most customers choose 4-20 mA HART because their existing DCS or PLC can read it without extra gateways. We have seen this on customer sites in Indonesia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and Chile.


Where Coriolis meters win over other types

Electromagnetic flow meters need a conductive liquid. Ultrasonic meters need clean flow profiles and decent straight runs. Vortex meters lose accuracy at low flow. Coriolis meters do not need conductivity and they handle low flow much better. A DN25 Coriolis meter from Silver Instruments can measure from 0 to 3000 kg/h for water like liquids. That covers pilot plants and small additive dosing skids.

Coriolis meters also handle two phase flow better than most velocity based meters. That matters in food and beverage where product pulses and air slugs happen. A dairy in Australia used our DN50 model to measure milk concentrate. The line pressure was 8 bar and temperature stayed near 65 °C. They replaced an oval gear meter because solids buildup caused repeat failures. We did not promise a perfect solution for every product. Precision that operators can trust

Standard accuracy for our Coriolis mass flow meters is ±0.2 percent of rate for liquids and ±0.5 percent of rate for gases. Many units are calibrated on water at the factory. Some customers ask for viscosity calibration or high pressure calibration. We can arrange that before shipping. Repeatability is usually better than ±0.05 percent. That makes the meter useful for truck loading and reactor charging where batch errors cost money.

Here is the thing. Accuracy claims mean little without matching the meter to the actual flow range. A meter sized for 20000 kg/h will not read 50 kg/h well. We ask for minimum flow, normal flow, and maximum flow on every inquiry. This is not marketing wording. It is the difference between a stable process signal and a noisy reading.


Fluids and industries we cover

Installation and process conditions

Most engineers skip this part until site work starts. Then they ask about straight run, vibration, and zero calibration. Coriolis meters are less sensitive to straight run than vortex or ultrasonic meters. A straight pipe run of 5D upstream and 2D downstream is often enough. But the meter must be full of liquid. Install it in a low point or use a back pressure valve for liquids that can flash. Gas applications need pressure high enough to keep the gas density stable for stable mass measurement.

Mount the meter on a rigid pipe support. Vibration from nearby pumps can affect the low flow signal. Zero the meter with the pipe full and no flow. Do this after installation and before startup. This takes about two minutes from the transmitter keypad. For large lines above DN100, use wafer or flanged connections according to your piping standard. We supply DIN, ANSI, and JIS flanges based on the destination country.


Model selection and sizing

Silver Instruments offers standard Coriolis models from DN15 to DN300. The DN15 covers 0 to 3000 kg/h for water. The DN25 covers 0 to 10000 kg/h. The DN50 covers 0 to 40000 kg/h. Bigger sizes go up to 800 t/h for liquids. Gas flow capacity depends on pressure and density. A 2 inch meter at 10 bar can measure much more gas mass flow than the same meter at 1 bar.

Price factors for Coriolis flow meters

Price depends on line size, wetted material, transmitter type, approvals, and calibration. A basic DN15 liquid meter costs less than a DN100 gas meter with ATEX Zone 1 and remote transmitter. We do not publish fixed prices because most inquiries are not standard. But we do give quick budget numbers. For a standard industrial Coriolis meter without hazardous area approval, budget around USD 3500 to USD 6500 for DN15 to DN25. For DN50 to DN80 with 4-20 mA HART and stainless steel body, budget around USD 8000 to USD 15000. These are purchasing level estimates, not final quotes.

Do not size the meter by pipe diameter alone. Flow range matters more. A DN80 meter sized for 60 t/h will not be cheap. But a smaller DN25 meter cannot handle 60 t/h. FAQ

Can a Coriolis meter measure gas and liquid with the same unit?
Yes, but you must tell us the fluid and density. Gas versions use a different sensor drive and signal processing. The same meter cannot cover both liquid and gas at the same accuracy without proper sizing.

What is the minimum conductivity needed for a Coriolis meter?
None. Coriolis meters do not depend on conductivity. That is why they work for demineralised water, oils, solvents, and other non conductive fluids.

Do I need a straight run before the meter?
A short straight run is enough in most cases. We recommend 5D upstream and 2D downstream. The meter must be full of liquid and stable on its supports.

Can the meter handle high viscosity fluids?
