You cannot judge a slump or spike without a baseline. For a DN50 electromagnetic flow meter on a wastewater line, normal may be 18 to 22 m3/h. For a Coriolis mass meter on heavy fuel oil, normal may be 4,500 to 4,800 kg/h. Record fluid type, pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size DN, and normal flow range. Most engineers skip this part. We have seen this on customer sites many times. Without a baseline, a 10 percent drop is just a guess.


Slumps That Develop Over Hours or Days

A slow flow meter reading slump often starts as a small negative drift. The first thing to check is buildup on the sensor face. Magnetic flow meters can get grease, sludge, or lime scale on the electrodes. This reduces signal strength and shows a lower flow than actual. Oval gear meters may slow down when fluid viscosity rises above 100 cP or when the operating temperature drops. A customer in Vietnam saw a 12 percent slump on a thermal mass meter for biogas. The cause was moisture forming inside the sensor bridge. The fix was dry gas and a filter.

Why does a magnetic flow meter reading spike when a pump starts?
The starting current creates electromagnetic interference. A much bigger spike is often caused by air pockets or rapid acceleration of the fluid. Check the meter grounding and cable shield. Damping can hide the spike but it may also hide real flow changes.


What causes a Coriolis mass flow meter to fluctuate at low flow?
