Crude Oil Flow Meter 10 L/min for Core Flooding Laboratory: Specifications and Model Selection

Quick Answer: When you run core flooding tests with crude oil at 10 L/min, you need a flow meter that handles variable viscosity and gives direct mass flow. Silver Automation Instruments supplies Coriolis mass flow meters sized DN10 or DN15. These meters measure mass flow rate, density, and temperature, and they output 4-20 mA HART to your lab DAQ. This approach removes the need to compensate for density changes.

Core flooding labs in Southeast Asia and the Middle East use our meters for relative permeability and EOR studies. Last year, a petroleum engineering lab in Malaysia replaced a turbine meter with our Coriolis meter. The turbine meter clogged with waxy crude. Our meter has no moving parts and does not clog. The lab now gets stable readings at 10 L/min even when crude viscosity jumps from 5 cP to 50 cP.

Why a Coriolis Meter for 10 L/min Crude Oil

Most labs start with small flows of 0.1 to 2 L/min. But some core holders need 10 L/min to mimic near-wellbore velocities. At this rate, crude oil with 10 to 100 cP causes turbulence and wear in mechanical meters. A Coriolis meter measures mass directly. You get a mass flow value in kg/h that is independent of temperature and pressure. No need for density compensation. That is a big advantage when crude oil composition changes from experiment to experiment.

Here is the thing. You may start a test with light crude at 30 °C and finish with heavy crude at 80 °C. A volumetric meter like a turbine or oval gear requires density tables and temperature corrections. Our Coriolis meter gives you true mass flow straight away. It also outputs live density and temperature, so you can track oil properties in real time.

Key Specifications for 10 L/min Core Flooding Service

We size the meter based on your flow range and pressure drop limit. For 10 L/min crude oil, the common selection is a DN10 or DN15 Coriolis mass flow meter. The DN10 handles 0.5 to 15 L/min with good accuracy. If your crude has wax or solids, DN15 gives more margin and lower pressure drop.

Accuracy is ±0.2% of reading for liquids in the high range. Repeatability is better than ±0.1%. The meter covers viscosity from 0.5 cP to over 500 cP. It measures fluid temperature from -50 °C to 150 °C with a built-in PT100 sensor. Process pressure rating is up to 100 bar for standard models, and we can offer higher on request.

Materials: The wetted parts use 316L stainless steel as standard. For aggressive crude with H2S, we can supply Hastelloy C-22. Process connections are tri-clamp, flange, or NPT thread. Most labs prefer 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch tri-clamp for easy cleaning.

Output Signals and Data Logging

Standard outputs include 4-20 mA HART for mass flow and a separate 4-20 mA for density. You also get RS485 Modbus RTU and an active pulse output. Connect these to a PLC or a paperless recorder. Silver Instruments offers a paperless recorder that logs mass flow, density, and temperature at 1 Hz. You export data to a USB stick as CSV files. No more manual reading logs.

In practice, many labs run 24-hour core floods. They set up the recorder to trigger an alarm if flow drops below a setpoint due to core pluggi

ng. The meter and recorder combination saves a lot of downtime.

Installation and Pipeline Considerations

The meter needs a straight run of 5 pipe diameters upstream and 3 downstream. But because lab setups are cramped, we supply compact versions with less straight run requirement if you have a flow conditioner. Mount the meter horizontally with the flow from left to right. Avoid installing it at the highest point of the pipe where air bubbles can collect. For crude oil with dissolved gas, we recommend a small back pressure valve downstream to keep the oil in single phase.

A research institute in Indonesia contacted us for a 10 L/min test with live crude at 80 °C and 50 bar. They had space constraints. We provided a DN10 Coriolis meter with a 90-degree elbow upstream, and it still met the accuracy spec. We have seen this on customer sites many times. Proper zeroing at process temperature is more important than long straight runs.

Why Choose Silver Automation Instruments

We are a direct flow meter manufacturer, not a distributor. That means you get factory support for custody transfer and laboratory applications. We ship from our factory to your lab in Singapore, Dubai, São Paulo, or Lagos within two weeks for standard models. Each meter comes with a calibration certificate traceable to international standards. We also offer local service partners in several countries who can assist with onsite commissioning.

Send us your pressure (bar), temperature (°C), pipe size (DN), and flow range. We will select the right meter and email you a quotation within one business day. You can also ask for a data sheet or a typical accuracy curve for 10 L/min crude oil.

Frequently Asked Questions

What flow accuracy can I expect at 10 L/min?
For crude oil at 10 L/min, our Coriolis meter typically delivers ±0.2% of reading. Low flow cut-off is around 0.5 L/min. Actual accuracy depends on your viscosity and pressure. Send us your process data for a detailed accuracy curve.

Does the meter work with high viscosity crude?
Yes. We have installed meters on crude from 1 cP to over 500 cP. The Coriolis tube oscillation is unaffected by viscosity. You get the same mass flow accuracy without recalibration when you switch from diesel to heavy crude.

What output signals are available?
Standard outputs are 4-20 mA HART, RS485 Modbus RTU, and pulse. You can send mass flow and density to a PLC or paperless recorder. We also offer a local display with totalizer.

Is the meter suitable for ATEX Zone 1?
Many core flooding labs require ATEX Zone 1 or Zone 2 certification because crude oil vapor can accumulate. We supply meters with Ex d or Ex ia protection for gas groups IIB and IIC. Inform us about your zone classification and gas group.

What pipe size do I need for 10 L/min crude oil?
For 10 L/min, we recommend DN10 or DN15. A DN10 meter handles up to about 15 L/min with low pressure drop. If your oil has wax, a DN15 meter gives more margin. Standard process connections are 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch NPT, or tri-clamp. We can provide flange adapters.
